It’s so hard to say goodbye…

As we close this chapter of the BCAE’s history to embark on a new journey, we asked staff to share a memory, a final thought, or a lasting impression the BCAE has had on them.

From Staff Past & Present

Never have I worked with a more dedicated group of people than my team at the BCAE – and nor have I ever had coworkers as loyal and kind, hilarious and warm. In just 3 short years, my BCAE work-family became exactly that: my family. I think that speaks to the spirit of non-profit work: when you come in every day believing in the mission, putting your heart into everything that you do, and you work alongside people who believe in the same mission, and who care just as much about the work as you do, you form bonds that never truly break. Even though we’re all parting ways, I know I’ll still see my work-family for holidays, birthdays, reunions, and drinks-after-work. I’ll always be grateful for my time at the BCAE, the skills I learned both professionally and for fun (#neverstoplearning!) – but most of all, I’ll always be grateful for my BCAE Family. –Marie Scarfo, former Creative Marketing Associate

Tom Daley’s poetry. The songs of our voice students filling the halls on Tuesday nights. Trading notes on the local theatre scene with Bob Volante. Stealing a taste of Adam Centamore’s cheeses. Eating anything leftover from one of Diane Manteca’s classes. Complaining about the 10 pounds I gained months after starting the job. Sold-out cookbook events with Dorie Greenspan and Joanne Chang. Toasting my cherished colleagues after a big success that all of us owned as one amazing team. Chatting with Jo-Ann Gwon about the next in an incredibly impressive line of classes she would take. Learning the Salsa from Gail Gardner despite my bum knee. Being Joel Benjamin’s photo assistant on the Faces of 1933. Celebrating the BCAE’s 85th anniversary in a way I hope would have made our founder Dorothy Hewitt proud.  – Tom Formicola, former Director of Education

In 1933, Dorothy Hewitt formed a strong, socially-forward-thinking organization during a very challenging time in the world. I am proud to have been part of helping to carry her mission forward and am so grateful to have had the chance to work at the BCAE for a total of almost 13 years. I have been able to participate in challenging, gratifying and exciting projects in the Student Services, Weddings Rentals and Private Classes. I have built wonderful memories (including meeting David Ortiz, Dorie Greenspan, Joanne Chang, Chef Karen Akunowicz and Chef Tiffani Faison amongst many other cool and inspirational folks) and friendships with my fellow staff members, BCAE instructors and ever-supportive and awesome sponsors that I know will continue on. Thank you to all of you who have made my time here so memorable, and thank you, Dorothy Hewitt, for giving me this opportunity. – Sabrina Rossi, Senior Manager of Private Events & Rentals

I have enjoyed my time working here; though short I feel I have made lifelong friends through my colleagues, students and instructors. Since the beginning I’ve seen how much of an impact the BCAE’s work has had on the Boston community through the loyalty of everyone who walks through its doors. To understand my new position it was important for me to attend a variety of cooking classes; where right away I could feel the creative energy throughout the building. I took so much inspiration from these experiences that helped to motivate me when planning our entire cooking curriculum – our popular quarterly staples and trendy food classes alike. My biggest take away is how important lifelong learning really is and will continue to keep learning a priority in my own life. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the BCAE’s story!!  – Kyra James, Program Manager

BCAE has been an amazing experience for me all around. Not only was it a great place to work, it was a place where I learned and bonded with many. I’ve met so many wonderful students and instructors that have left a lasting impression on me that I will always cherish. I am truly grateful for the opportunity and time spent working for the BCAE and I’m sad that it has come to an end. All great things do not last forever so I will take this experience and treasure it along with great memories. – Latasha Lungelow, Student Services Representative

The BCAE has touched my life in countless ways. I have grown as a person, as a professional, and as a lover of education in true spirit of what Dorothy Hewitt envisioned. I am proud of the work we have done, the lives we have impacted, and the friendships we have built. To all of the BCAE staff, past and present, thank you. You embody the essence of life long learning. To the future BCAE staff, may you take the reins and ride on to create new educational opportunities for Greater Boston Communities. Here’s to an exceptional past and an exciting future. – Jamie Christo Brennan, Marketing Manager

A heartfelt thank you for 86 wonderful years. Here’s to a bright future.
