Through readings, video, and discussion, this course will help you develop an overall familiarity with dance as a contemporary art form. Through discussing issues in dance, comparing points of view of major choreographers, and considering their particular contributions, we’ll enlarge your critical perspective and enhance your appreciation of dance as an exciting and ever-changing performance art.
We will explore and watch videos of many 20th century choreographers/significant dance figures including: Isadora Duncan, Vaslav Nijinsky, George Balanchine, Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Merce Cunningham, Katherine Dunham, Alvin Ailey, Jose Limon, Twyla Tharp, and Judson Church.
The materials fee covers your ticket to a show from The Third Life Studio Choreographer Series on the last day of class. This series gives Boston-area choreographers a venue to try out new work in an informal setting, or to show more developed work. The intimate setting of Third Life Studios creates an opportunity for busy dance artists to see each other’s work, to network, and for audience members to see and meet established artists and up-and-coming dancers and choreographers they might not otherwise be exposed to. The Series has presented over 130 Boston dance groups and choreographers from NYC, Vermont, Philadelphia, and Connecticut.
