October 3, 2019

Dear members of BCAE’s community,

In the coming months, the Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE) will be initiating major changes in the ways we think about our mission and realize our goals. To that end, the BCAE’s Board of Directors has embarked on a strategic planning process that will help us determine our future course – one that will look nothing like the BCAE that our founder imagined in 1933, and very different even from the BCAE of today.

The evolving adult education environment has created unforeseen challenges to our traditional programs. Over recent years, we have seen an increase in operating deficits due to declining enrollments and increased cancellations. The Board takes seriously its fiduciary responsibility to be prudent stewards of BCAE assets and it has become clear that we have reached a point that is not sustainable.

Given these developments and after much careful thought, we know this is the right time to re-envision our organization. Therefore, the BCAE Board of Directors has decided to cease educational and special event programming at the end of December 2019.  We did not reach this decision lightly and know that it may be difficult for the many who have helped to make the BCAE a venerable Boston institution. All classes in the current term as well as those in the November-December catalog will remain as scheduled. We hope that you will register for these final classes with BCAE instructors who are ready to share their talents.

Our planning process will be facilitated by TDC, a Boston-based nonprofit management consulting firm, widely known as a wise and experienced advisor. As part of looking forward, we hope to engage BCAE stakeholders who, like you, know the organization well and can imagine new ways to serve the educational needs of adults in Boston. If you are interested in sharing your ideas with TDC, please participate in our survey.

We look forward to transforming the BCAE into a modern Boston resource that enhances adult learning for many. We urge you to visit our website and view our FAQ for further details.

Thank you for your support and participation in BCAE’s learning community over the years. We will keep you apprised as we create new and exciting ways to build on BCAE’s 86-year legacy.

Sincerely,

Dean T. Hara, Chair
BCAE Board of Directors
